Venetian Theriac

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

Venetian theriac was a celebrated compound medicine in medieval and early modern Europe, developed from older antidote traditions. Apothecaries combined many aromatic, bitter and resinous materials, with recipes changing by place and period.

What Modern Research Has Found

Historical and analytical research reconstructs recipes, studies surviving samples and traces early medicines regulation. It shows that theriac was a changing compound preparation rather than a single standardized herb. Modern clinical efficacy has not been established.

A Historical Compound, Not One Herb

Historical theriac formulae changed substantially over time and could contain dozens of ingredients. Therefore a modern ingredient listed as "Venetian theriac" should not be assumed to match any one ancient pharmacopoeial recipe unless the supplier's formulation is documented.

Venetian Theriac in Formulae

Isabelle's Digestive Tonic lists Venetian theriac among its ingredients. The exact modern composition of that supplied ingredient is not established by the historical name alone.
