What Modern Research Has Found

Defined senna preparations have a well-established stimulant-laxative effect for short-term constipation. Sennosides are converted to active metabolites in the colon. Amount and duration determine exposure; prolonged use can cause fluid and electrolyte problems.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Leaves and pods both contain sennosides, anthranoid glycosides whose metabolites act in the colon. They are related but separately standardized medicinal materials. Cramping and loose stools can occur, and pregnancy or prolonged use calls for particular care.
