Gravel root

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

Eclectic herbalists used Eutrochium root in decoctions and compound urinary mixtures. They chose it within a focused urinary tradition, often alongside other roots and aromatic herbs. The material discussed historically is the root, especially of Eutrochium purpureum.

What Modern Research Has Found

The strongest evidence for gravel root is the documented historical urinary use. Controlled human research remains lacking, while modern quality review must address botanical authentication and possible pyrrolizidine-alkaloid exposure.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

The relevant historical part is the root of Eutrochium purpureum. Certain related plants raise pyrrolizidine-alkaloid concerns, so authenticated sourcing matters.
