Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis)

In Plain English

Marshmallow root is a demulcent, a mucilage-rich herb that develops a slippery, coating texture in water. Herbalists have long valued it in soothing throat and digestive preparations. The way it is steeped matters because its water-loving polysaccharides are central to that traditional character.

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

European herbalists choose marshmallow root for dry, irritated throats and mild digestive discomfort. It is a demulcent: its mucilage forms a slippery, soothing preparation in water. Cool-water macerations, teas and syrups are customary ways to bring out this quality.

What Modern Research Has Found

Research characterizes marshmallow's water-swelling polysaccharides and their coating properties. The European monograph recognizes its traditional use for mouth and throat irritation and mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Human clinical research is less developed than this long preparation history.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Polysaccharide mucilage accounts for the slippery texture. These water-loving compounds swell during preparation, which is why steeping or maceration method changes the finished texture.

Marshmallow root in Formulae

Kidney LifeBoost Tea and Kidney Cleanse formats pair marshmallow's demulcent root with aromatic urinary herbs. Colon products place it beside fiber ingredients, where its mucilage-rich character is distinct from bulk-forming fiber.
