Nettle leaf

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

European herbalists steeped young Urtica leaves and also ate them as greens after cooking. The leaf's mineral content helped shape its reputation as a tonic, an older word for a gently restorative herb. Monographs also document leaf use in urinary-flow tea combinations. The stinging fresh plant and dried or cooked leaf are different experiences.

What Modern Research Has Found

European assessments document traditional urinary use of nettle leaf, while constituent studies describe flavonoids, phenolic compounds and minerals. Leaf-specific clinical evidence is limited; nettle-root studies concern a different herbal material.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Leaves contain flavonoids, phenolics and minerals. They are dried for infusions or cooked as greens; the root has a separate preparation history.
