Chimaphila umbellata

In Plain English

Pipsissewa, or prince's pine, is a small evergreen woodland herb used in North American urinary teas. Herbalists value the leaf's mildly bitter, astringent character. It is commonly prepared as tea or extract and is distinct from wintergreen essential oil.

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

King's American Dispensatory documents Chimaphila umbellata leaf as a urinary tea ingredient within Eclectic practice. Pipsissewa is a urinary herb in Eclectic language, an herb placed in combinations concerned with normal fluid elimination.

What Modern Research Has Found

Research describes leaf phenolics, including arbutin-related compounds, alongside a documented urinary-herbal history. Modern controlled clinical trials are sparse, so the evidence is primarily historical and phytochemical.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

The leaf contains phenolics including arbutin-related compounds. It is distinct from Gaultheria wintergreen essential oil.

Pipsissewa in Formulae

Kidney Cleanse Drops and Kidney Cleanse Capsules pair pipsissewa with other urinary-tradition herbs such as juniper and goldenrod.
