Orange peel

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

Many culinary and herbal traditions use dried citrus peel as an aromatic bitter or formula flavor, particularly in after-meal mixtures. Its peel is a carminative, an aromatic ingredient traditionally used for digestive comfort, as well as a way to soften the taste of bitter mixtures.

What Modern Research Has Found

Chemical research describes citrus-peel flavanones and aromatic compounds such as limonene. Modern biological studies often use isolated flavonoids, peel extracts or concentrated oils. These preparations differ from dried peel steeped in tea.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Flavanones and aromatic limonene occur in peel. The particular citrus species and oil concentration change interpretation.

Orange peel in Formulae

In Good Night Tea the citrus note lightens a relaxing blend; in Stomach Soothing and Liver LifeBoost teas it accompanies digestive aromatics and bitters. Kidney LifeBoost Tea uses its flavor to round out a largely urinary-herbal blend.
