Lemongrass

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

The fragrant stems are used in broths, while leaves are commonly steeped as tea. Herbalists value it as an aromatic, meaning its volatile scent and flavor are an important part of the preparation. It pairs easily with stronger roots and bitter herbs.

What Modern Research Has Found

Research identifies citral as a key source of lemongrass's lemon scent. Laboratory studies of citral and distilled oil investigate antimicrobial and other biological activity. Human research on leaf tea is much smaller and includes assessments of tolerability.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Citral is a major volatile constituent responsible for much of the lemon-like aroma. C. citratus and C. flexuosus are related commercial sources.

Lemongrass in Formulae

In Immune LifeBoost Tea, lemongrass brightens a seasonal blend. In Colon Detox Tea and the 5-Day Kit, its aromatic flavor complements heavier fiber and bitter ingredients.
