Black walnut hull

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

North American Eclectic and folk herbalists used black walnut's green hull in bitter, astringent tinctures and compound intestinal preparations. Its tannin-rich character gives a drying, puckering quality. The hull also has a longstanding use as a dark natural dye.

What Modern Research Has Found

Laboratory research has characterized juglone and investigated its biological activity, including antimicrobial effects. Clinical research on black-walnut hull preparations remains sparse. The edible nut and outer hull are separate materials.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

The outer hull contains tannins and juglone; the edible kernel and bark are different materials. Nut allergy is relevant to customer understanding.
