Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

Indigenous North American use of Echinacea species preceded later Eclectic and modern Western herbal practice. What Modern Research Has Found

Some trials of specified Echinacea preparations report a modest reduction in the chance of catching a cold, while effects on illness duration are less consistent. Species, root versus aerial herb, and extraction explain important differences between preparations.

Parts Traditionally Used

Flowering herb: Above-ground leaves, stems and flower heads are used in some teas and extracts. Research on E. purpurea herb is preparation-specific.

Root: E. angustifolia root has a distinct historical and commercial identity, often in tinctures. It should not inherit evidence from E. purpurea herb.
