Cayenne pepper fruit

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

Cayenne-type peppers became part of culinary and herbal practices in the Americas and beyond. Herbalists used their pungency in warming formulae and external rubs, sometimes calling the topical effect rubefacient: producing local warmth and redness. The exact Capsicum species and amount matter, and topical use requires careful handling.

What Modern Research Has Found

Clinical research on standardized topical capsaicin preparations has found pain relief in specified conditions. Capsaicin activates heat-sensitive nerve receptors, accounting for the initial burning sensation. Study findings depend on concentration, vehicle and application; whole-pepper rubs are different preparations.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Capsaicinoids create the heat; concentration and route determine irritation potential.
