Skullcap herb

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

Eclectic herbalists used American skullcap's green aerial growth in preparations for restlessness and nervous tension. Its nervine reputation concerns a calming herbal role, often in combinations. Historical writers also noted substitutions, making correct botanical identity part of that tradition.

What Modern Research Has Found

Modern studies of specified skullcap preparations are small and limited. Research has characterized flavonoids and explored nervous-system activity in experimental models. Species and extraction remain central to interpreting the evidence.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Species, fresh-versus-dried form and extraction affect interpretation. Liver-safety concerns with misidentified material warrant quality control.

Skullcap in Formulae

Deep Heat lists skullcap in an external ointment; that topical route should not be described as the same use as a calming tea or tincture.
