Betula spp.

In Plain English

Birch essential oil is an aromatic distillate often associated with sweet birch, Betula lenta. Some commercial birch oils are rich in methyl salicylate, the same strongly scented compound found in wintergreen oil. Species and authenticity matter: “birch” alone does not establish this oil's composition.

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

Sweet birch oil has figured in external aromatic rub traditions, but concentrated oil differs sharply from a birch-leaf tea. It belongs to a topical warming-rub tradition rather than the gentle leaf-infusion story.

What Modern Research Has Found

Analytical studies characterize authentic sweet-birch oil and investigate adulteration. Methyl salicylate contributes the strong aroma and topical sensory action. This composition research is especially useful because a birch name alone does not confirm the oil's identity.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Methyl salicylate can be toxic if swallowed and requires careful topical formulation and child-safety controls.
