Juniper

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

The berry-like cones of Juniperus communis have a European culinary and herbal history. Herbalists crushed or steeped the aromatic cones in urinary preparations, and European monographs specifically record their traditional role in increasing urine flow. The same intense flavor also made juniper a spice. The whole cone is a different material from concentrated juniper essential oil.

What Modern Research Has Found

The European assessment supports a longstanding traditional role for specified juniper-cone preparations in urinary flushing and mild digestive complaints. Phytochemical research identifies aromatic monoterpenes in the cones. Controlled clinical evidence for juniper tea remains limited.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Monoterpenes are prominent in the volatile oil. Pregnancy calls for particular care with medicinal preparations.
