Flax seed

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

European food-herbal practice soaked or crushed the seeds so their mucilage could form a slippery preparation. They were eaten or taken with generous liquid for a bulk-forming effect. A warm seed poultice appears in older external traditions as well.

What Modern Research Has Found

Defined linseed preparations have an established bulk-forming effect: seed fiber takes up water, softens the stool and helps bowel movement. The seed also supplies lignans and alpha-linolenic acid. Whole seed, ground seed and flax oil have different fiber and fat profiles.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

Flaxseed contains mucilage, fiber, lignans and alpha-linolenic acid. Whole, crushed and ground seed release these contents differently. Adequate liquid matters for bulk-forming use.
