Chamomile

Traditional Uses & Why Herbalists Value It

European herbalists steeped chamomile flower heads for their aroma, mild bitterness and longstanding use in digestive and restful-evening routines. In a digestive blend, its gentle character can sit beside warming spices; in an evening tea, it contributes familiar calming ritual and flavor. German chamomile (Matricaria) and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum) are different plants with related but distinct histories.

What Modern Research Has Found

A small placebo-controlled trial of German chamomile extract found a greater reduction in anxiety scores in adults with mild to moderate generalized anxiety disorder. Research on sleep and other uses is less conclusive. The trial tested an oral extract of German chamomile, a different preparation from a mixed flower tea.

Plant Part, Preparation & Natural Constituents

German chamomile flowers contain flavonoids including apigenin derivatives and aromatic compounds; Asteraceae sensitivity is relevant.
