Ginger is a warming, aromatic rhizome valued for digestive comfort and nausea-related herbal use. Fresh slices, dried powder and extracts deliver its pungent gingerols and shogaols in different proportions. It is a familiar spice as well as a well-studied digestive herb.
Marshmallow root is a demulcent, a mucilage-rich herb that develops a slippery, coating texture in water. Herbalists have long valued it in soothing throat and digestive preparations. The way it is steeped matters because its water-loving polysaccharides are central to that traditional character.
Fennel's so-called seeds are dried fruits prized for a sweet anise scent. Herbalists call fennel a carminative, an aromatic digestive used traditionally after meals for gas and comfort. Its fruit adds warmth and sweetness alongside bitter roots or bulk-forming seeds in a blend.
Flaxseed is an edible seed used for bowel regularity and its slippery, soothing mucilage. With water, the fiber swells into a soft gel. It also contains lignans and the plant omega-3 fat alpha-linolenic acid; the oil contains fat but lacks the whole seed's fiber.
Peppermint leaf is a cooling aromatic digestive herb. Herbalists call such plants carminatives, traditionally used after meals for gas and digestive comfort. Its minty scent can also brighten a complex tea, while concentrated peppermint oil is a substantially different preparation.
Slippery elm comes from the inner bark of a North American tree. When mixed with water, it forms a slippery mucilage; herbalists call that demulcent, meaning a soothing, coating quality. Inner bark is the traditional material, rather than the tree's tougher outer bark.
Psyllium is a water-swelling seed fiber used to add bulk and support bowel regularity. Whole seed and separated outer husk are related, with husk more concentrated in soluble fiber by weight. Both work physically by holding water and forming a soft gel, so liquid matters.
Apple fruit provides several kinds of dietary fiber. Pectin is its soluble, gel-forming fraction, while broader apple fiber also includes other cell-wall material. In a formula, both can add body when mixed with water; how the fiber is processed and the amount used shape the result.
Activated charcoal is a highly porous form of processed carbon valued for adsorption: substances adhere to its enormous internal surface area. It is not an herb, and the carbon source can vary. In SpeedyVite colon formulae it serves a physical adsorptive role alongside fibers and soothing botanical materials.
